Time and time again here at Express
Nets (http://www.expressnets.co.uk),
we have customers asking us which colours of curtains and blinds would work well
for their room. We can be a little wary of giving advice on this subject,
partly because it isn't our house or office that is being decorated - the
shades that we can live with on a daily basis may be somewhat different for
you. In addition, there are so many other aspects of your room's decor that can
dictate how good the chosen curtain or blind looks 'in situ'.
Nonetheless, we can still give a few
pointers on choosing the right window covering colour. If you're not the
fussiest person in the world and would just like a no-nonsense window covering
that won't leave you with headaches for years to come, the obvious advice is to
choose a colour similar to the wall colour - perhaps one shade lighter or
darker. The change in texture that the fabric brings will keep this part of
your room interesting, but such a colour will also ensure that the curtain
blends in with the rest of your decor and helps you to relax - the latter an
important consideration when buying curtains or blinds for
most parts of the house.
It may be the case that you want
your windows to be the focal point, but don't want your curtains to jar too
much with the rest of your decor. If so, fair enough - just choose a bolder
colour, or perhaps a more sombre colour with a bold border. We'd shy away from
choosing an especially outrageous fabric or colour, unless you really do have a
'loud' taste in home decor, as whether you choose curtains, Venetian
blinds, roller blinds or a completely different window covering, you'll
need to be able to live with them on a daily basis. Plus, given that the
covering should be there for a decade or so if you are to get the maximum value
for money from it, you'll probably want your chosen colour scheme to be
relatively timeless so that it does not rapidly date.
Window blinds and curtains aren't
like the occasional loud shirt that you wear for one day - as you'll be living
with them constantly, a slight conservativeness in your choice is a good idea.
That is not to suggest, however, your home or office should be hopelessly
plain. Just take a look at the current Express Nets range, and you'll find such
options as wooden Venetian blinds in earthy shades like chalk, oak and teak, roller
blinds with subtle and charming floral designs and classic adventurous
styles like our black or red Zurich eyelet curtains. Naturally, we also have
plenty of white curtains and blinds for those environments - such as the office
- where a more clinical and perhaps workmanlike effect is desired.
