South Korea to ban incandescent lighting from 2014

Here at Ryness Lighting and Electrical (http://www.ryness.co.uk), we take great pride in bringing our customers exceptional choice, even when external circumstances might make this difficult. Such is the case with our vast range of light bulbs, with customers still able to purchase from the dwindling stocks of traditional incandescent bulbs, even as the EU gradually phases them out. However, these bulbs will also soon cease to be an option elsewhere in the world, forcing the wholesale switch to LED light bulbs – as will be the case in South Korea.

It was announced by the Seoul government on Tuesday that from 1st January 2014, both the production and import of incandescent bulbs will be permanently banned, on account of their low efficiency. The move by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is part of a wider drive to phase out light bulbs of this type, as decided on by 2008, a not very surprising move given that such bulbs consume up to six times more energy than LED light bulbs.

The ministry stated in a press release that the energy bills and purchase costs of an incandescent light bulb may be as high as 15,863 won (£9.42) per year in the country, compared to the equivalent annual figure of as little as 2,813 won (£1.67) for an LED light bulb – a drop of 82.3 per cent. Throughout the country, around 30 million incandescent light bulbs continue to be used. If the bulbs are all replaced with more energy-efficient light bulbs, the ministry said, more than 1,800 gigawatts of electricity could be saved each year, enough for as many as 650,000 households to use during the same period.

99 per cent of the incandescent light bulbs used in some 8,000 public buildings have already been replaced by the government. The ministry added that there is presently only one local manufacturer of incandescent light bulbs, with the majority of the country’s supplies being sourced overseas, principally from China. The government said that it would continue expanding the supply of high efficiency light bulbs, including LED light bulbs, to minimise the market impact and the inconvenience to the public.

This is just the latest event showing how LED light bulbs are becoming the increasingly dominant option over traditional incandescent options – and here at Ryness Lighting and Electrical (http://www.ryness.co.uk), we see no reason why your own household shouldn’t follow suit. LED light bulbs are as much as 85 per cent more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs, and have an average use of at least 25,000 hours – about 25 years. So, why not peruse our range now so that you can start taking advantage of their benefits?
