Working from home in London: could office clearance be the answer?

In recent years, it seems that the distinction between the home and the office has become progressively less marked. Whereas the office-based ‘9 to 5’ was once customary for London workers, in more recent years, there has been a greater emphasis on remote working, in particular from home. Or at least there was, report the house clearance experts at Just-Clear (http://www.just-clear.co.uk), until a certain announcement from Yahoo.

The recent ban on remote working that the search giant has imposed on its staff as of June seems somewhat against the zeitgeist – and indeed, Virgin entrepreneur Richard Branson’s was one of a chorus of disapproving voices, as he described it as a “backwards step in an age when remote working is easier and more effective than ever”. Branson spends much of his own time working from Necker Island in the Caribbean, and he and others could be forgiven for wondering what has driven Yahoo to make this move – thought to be the idea of new chief executive Marissa Mayer, who returned to work herself only weeks after giving birth.

Certainly, the decision has widely reopened the debate on home working in London, with some suggesting that the practice isn’t quite what it’s cracked up to be. The relative invisibility of home workers may make them less likely to be promoted. In addition, home working has struggled to shrug off an image problem as the preserve of skivers – as epitomised by Mayor Boris Johnson’s joke that “we all know that is basically sitting wondering whether to go down to the fridge to hack off that bit of cheese before checking your emails again.”

This does, however, raise a certain other question...could the home working environment simply be improved for Londoners? After all, it’s difficult to argue against such a practice if productivity levels are no worse than those achieved when all employees are constantly together in the same office. Certainly, it is well-documented that home workers can find it hard to concentrate when their office is full of clutter, which makes professional, efficient and cost-effective office clearance services a potentially very worthwhile investment.

You may think that when you’re working from home, you have everything that you need to hand. However, studies have shown that a messy office really does have an adverse effect on many people’s productivity. Luckily, Just-Clear provides fully insured and licensed home and office clearance services across and even beyond London, ensuring that your own home office is soon free of the distracting clutter that may currently be causing you to rethink home working.

Statistics suggest that home working could currently be on the increase in the UK. Certainly, the success of the widespread remote working that took place during last year’s Olympic Games, as many London workers chose to avoid the traffic disruption, shows that it still has potential – however cynical Yahoo may be!
