Visit the Canal du Midi from our charming bed and breakfast in the South of France

La Souqueto (http://www.lasouqueto.com) Bed and Breakfast is situated only a few minutes’ walk from the famous Canal du Midi in the beautiful Languedoc-Roussillon region in the South of France, 45 minutes from Carcassonne, the department capital. If you are looking for a bed and breakfast in the south of France, this is the perfect place from which to explore the region.

There are so many things to see and do in and around the medieval village of Mirepeisset - which literally means ‘the place to see fish’ - echoing the crystal clear waters of the pretty river Cesse which is only a few minutes’ walk away, and what better way to tour the area than staying in the charming townhouse, La Souqueto?

By day you can travel to the nearby historical town of Narbonne (14km away), or to Port-la-Nouvelle on the coast, with its quaint old fishing quarter and a 15 kilometre stretch of white sand, where there are plenty of activities for all the family to enjoy on this ‘blue flag’ cleanest of beaches.

The Canal du Midi is 240 kilometres long and links the Atlantic ocean to the Mediterranean sea. At the time of its construction, authorised by Louis XIV, it was an enormous undertaking but it was thought imperative to find a solution for sailing around the Iberian Peninsula when transporting goods. Today, the canal provides water in the dry season and remains a strong focus for river tourism. Visitors, including many taking advantage of our bed and breakfast in the South of France, sail on a variety of boats ranging from chartered boats and restaurant boats to hotel barges.

Closer to home, our own Bella Mia is a classic mahogany cruiser originally built for the racing driver A F Rivers-Fletcher in 1960. She is definitely designed for comfort rather than speed and this lovingly fully restored classic cruiser – available as a floating gite - sleeps up to four people. She is currently moored to the bank but day trips down the river can be arranged. This is the perfect lazy way to enjoy a day soaking up the atmosphere of the Canal du Midi and a real talking point, as you won’t find another bed and breakfast in the south of France like her!
