The 3 Rs

It’s obvious that our loyal customers visit us online at Ryness (http://www.ryness.co.uk/) because they want quality and value. And our increasing sales of LED light bulbs may well be due to a desire to save energy and therefore money rather than to save the environment. But there are a lot of people that do care about green issues. Whether you think that global warming is a man-made or naturally occurring phenomenon, most of us see the need to lessen the levels of pollution and harmful waste we pump into the environment. If you choose energy saving light bulbs you´ll be saving money on the energy cost, you’ll be doing your bit to reduce the need to burn fossil fuels or use electricity generation from a renewable source, and in the case of LED light bulbs, with a life span of some 25 years, you’ll be adding less to landfill and reducing the need to expend energy on recycling. Not to mention the need to buy a new light bulb of course.

If you buy light bulbs online you should think about choosing LED light bulbs. And in 25 years time when you need to replace them you should think about how to dispose of them with minimal impact on the environment. Twenty-five years seems like a long time but we’ve been in business for over 50 years, so if LED bulbs were available when we started we’d be replacing old for new ones for the second time round, right about now.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is a mantra for a more energy efficient and environmentally aware world. The idea is to reduce the amount of waste you produce and to reduce the time you use the product therefore increasing the amount of time it’s viable for. And to re-use products or put them to a different use where possible and when something’s no longer fit for purpose, recycle it.

One simple way to extend the lifespan of LED light bulbs is to switch them off. Whilst that might sound obvious, we think it’s worth repeating. Most have us have left a room and left the light on. Sometimes its forgetfulness but sometimes it’s because we’ve known that with incandescent bulbs, increasing the switching off and on of the unit can weaken the filament. There was a school of thought that said the extra cost of electricity was worth accepting if you didn’t want to keep buying and replacing new bulbs. Not only do LED bulbs have a longer life, they also don’t lose any integrity when the current is switched off and on. So it’s definitely worth switching them off when no ones in the room.

After 25 years of service you are unlikely to be able to find a different use for them so the “Reuse” part of the paradigm may not apply. But you should always recycle. And you should always visit Ryness (http://www.ryness.co.uk/) when, after 25 years, you need to replace them.
