Feed your garden birds throughout the year

Garden birds will need feeding throughout the year, so it’s a good idea to buy bulk wild bird food. You’ll make a saving over time, and, the birds will have a steady supply of food in every season. Better yet, you’ll have a steady show of wild birds coming to your garden. From the bright orange robin to the sapphire blue tit and more, there’s a good reason every season to keep your local birds well fed.

In the winter, food is scarce. Birds need lots of fats to keep themselves insulated, and while they can get that from suet balls, peanuts are also a great source of lipids. They also provide oil and protein for the bird to burn while flying day to day. If you’re looking for bulk wild bird food, we have 25kg bundles of peanuts in our online shop.

Then in the spring, many species of wild bird will be nesting. The bird that isn’t sitting on the eggs will need a constant supply of food for itself and to give to its partner. After that, the chicks will hatch. Even more food will be needed then, and as anyone who watches wild birds will know, mother and father need to eat or they will get decidedly scruffy. They could even lose the nest without enough food. To get bulk wild bird food, you can also find sunflower hearts with us at 22.68 kilograms a pack.

Later in the summer months and towards Christmas, birds shed their plumage. This takes a lot out of them. Understandably, they need to replace the energy that they’ve lost, and grow new feathers. As the cold weather returns, warm deposits of fat become important again. Knowing that your garden has the good stuff will keep them coming back throughout the year, and as a whole range of species can eat peanuts or sunflower hearts, you’ll get a great variety of birds. You may even see rarer types like the woodpecker.

As species continue to decline, providing for our feathered friends throughout the year has never been so important. The last count showed a continued reduction in common birds like thrushes. It may be that the reduction of garden space and the food that goes with it is one of the causes.
