Do you struggle with rosacea?

Gentlemen’s Tonic (http://www.gentlemenstonic.com) takes pride in offering a wide range of products for traditional male grooming, encompassing bodycare, shaving, haircare and styling lines – including the best mens shave cream, moisturisers, shampoo and more. These products are infused with a similarly wide range of essential ingredients that help to keep the modern, discerning man looking and feeling good, with many helping to combat any of a series of troubling skin conditions – of which one example is rosacea.

This chronic skin condition is not well understood, but it is certainly common, affecting around one in 10 people in the UK – generally in middle age. However, a person can first develop rosacea symptoms in their early 20s. This skin condition affects parts of the face and is characterised by such symptoms as facial flushing, facial redness, thickening of the skin and spots, with eye problems – such as sore eyelids and dry eyes – also potentially arising. Episodes of blushing tend to occur first, and they may remain the only symptom for months or years.

Symptoms can differ substantially from person to person, with some people only ever experiencing one or two of the symptoms in mild form. For others, there may be several symptoms, but with one especially dominant. Although spots also occur in rosacea, with papules and pustules leading some people to mistake the condition for acne and also potentially being quite prominent, they don’t always arise at all. For some people, it is eye symptoms that occur first, before any noticeable changes in the skin. The usual age range for rosacea, meanwhile, is from the 30s to the 50s, with women being affected more often than men – although it is frequently more severe for men. You’re also more likely to suffer it if you are fair skinned than dark skinned.

There has been much debate about what causes rosacea, although no one factor has been proven to have a definitive link. There have been suggestions that sun damage could be a cause, as well as that a role may be played by demodex folliculorum, which is a tiny, and ordinarily harmless mite living on many people’s skin that has been found in higher numbers in rosacea sufferers. It has also been suggested that external heat, hot beverages, spicy foods, tobacco and alcohol could all trigger it. Nor does rosacea have a permanent cure, and you can’t prevent it from starting. What you can do, however, is manage the symptoms, with traditional male grooming having a great role in this.

There are many treatments that can help to relieve rosacea symptoms, depending on the exact symptoms and their severity. One other measure that can be of great help to male rosacea sufferers, is keeping the skin cleansed and hydrated with gentle non-cosmedogenic products, such as the mens foaming cleanser which feature as part of the Gentlemen’s Tonic range available at http://www.gentlemenstonic.com.
